Wear a helmet

When using àVélo, wearing a helmet is not just a safety recommendation — it is a legal requirement. According to article 492.2 of the Highway Safety Code, it is prohibited to use an electric‑assist bicycle without wearing a helmet. Since our entire fleet is electric‑assist, wearing a helmet is mandatory.

Ride in the right place

Whether you’re using àVélo or your own bike, the rules are the same. It is always best to use the cycling network when available. If there is no bike infrastructure, ride on the roadway in the same direction as cars, staying to the right. It is strictly forbidden to ride on sidewalks or pedestrian areas with a bicycle.

Stay alert

For your own safety and the safety of others, you must always remain attentive when using àVélo. Here are four guidelines to ensure safe coexistence for everyone:

  • Do not use your cellphone while riding.
  • Do not wear headphones.
  • Do not use àVélo if your abilities are impaired.
  • Do not obstruct your vision with an oversized item in the basket. And remember: the basket is for carrying objects only!

Respect the Highway Safety Code

When riding an electric‑assist bicycle, just like with any other land-based mode of transportation, it is essential to follow the Highway Safety Code. Always obey traffic signals (traffic lights, stop signs, one-way streets, etc.), keep a reasonable distance from other road users, and signal your intentions with your arm.

Age requirement

The minimum age for using electric‑assist bicycles is set by the SAAQ in accordance with the Highway Safety Code. By law, the service is therefore reserved for people aged 18 and over. Two exceptions are allowed:

  • Individuals aged 16 and over who hold a driver’s licence;
  • Individuals aged 14 and over who hold a moped licence (6D).

Pre‑ride check

Before starting a trip, it is recommended to:

  • Adjust your seat according to your height and comfort;
  • Check that the brakes, bell, and lights are working;
  • Make sure the tires are in good condition.

If everything looks good, you’re ready to ride. If you notice any issue, please report it using the red button on the docking station and take another bike.
